Course Code: T&L 2900, 3D Printing in the Classroom

This introductory course is designed for elementary and secondary teachers who are looking to infuse design principles into regular educational learning. Teachers will captivate student interest through basic 3D design and prototyping whereas these concepts can be applied to any subject area.

From initial set-up to classroom integration, Learners will learn how to integrate higher-order thinking skills, where prototyped designs connect to real-world learning. Learners will learn how to operate and troubleshoot a 3D printer and design engaging and practical hands-on projects that are suitable for use with elementary and secondary students in STEAM and PA Core-aligned curricula.

Learners will also learn how to find, download, remix, and print items ranging from simple products to mechanical gears. Learners will use free 3D modeling CAD software to create, share, publish and print their own custom designs. Join us to transform your lesson plans and projects by enabling students to design and produce decorative items as well as engineered solutions to real-world problems.

Learning Goals

  • Understand the basic principles of 3D printing including important vocabulary and the importance of design for any age
  • Operate a 3D printer including its calibration and configuration as well as troubleshooting common problems
  • Explore free 3D modeling software to design objects that can be printed across curricular areas
  • Enhance existing curricular activities that can be enhanced with the use of a 3D printing and design in grade K-12
  • Design  new standards-based learning activities for students that make use of a 3D printer
  • Publish and share custom 3D designs with an online portfolio

Through our partnership with the University of North Dakota, we offer 3 graduate-level professional development credits for all of our courses. Upon courses completion, participants will receive an official University Transcript. Courses are also available in Non-credit version where participants can receive credit hours to submit for Act 48.
