Class Overview

Course Code: T&L 2900, Introduction to Coding and Robotics

The coding movement is sweeping the present workforce and education along with it.  This coding and robotics course is for educators of all subjects and levels. Some content as a strong tie to K-8 subjects, however, the skills can be applied to K-12 educators.  Whether you are brand-new to coding or you have experience building programs, this course will help enforce the basic fundamentals. This course will take you from defining what code is and building your first program to utilizing loops and if-then statements to design fully functioning programs.

This course is specifically focused on the building blocks of coding skills and vocabulary.  Educators will learn coding through multiple platforms and evaluate which platform is best for their particular students.  We will unbox the brand-new Ozobots to further escalate the coding skills and see how seamlessly these tools connect to the curriculum and standards.  Educators will be immersed in curriculum-based activities to learn how to design their own coding and robotics lessons. If you are searching for ways to engage your students with a challenge, this course is for you!

Learning Goals

  • Learn the basic foundations of coding language and key vocabulary.
  • Understand how coding strategies connect to all subjects and content areas.
  • Learn how to program basic code through block-based formatting.
  • Explore various block coding platforms for instructional goals.
  • Engage in hands-on standards-based activities to see how coding activities connect to the classroom.
  • Learn the basic functions of an Ozobot and how to code it with markers.
  • Explore how to utilize Ozoblockly coding to program Ozobots to perform advanced functions.
  • Create activities to connect Ozobots to your curriculum and classroom.

This course will meet through an online video platform weekly with some additional asynchronous work.

This class has scheduled weekly meetings online. Conflicts with a couple of meetings can be accommodated by the instructor and should not be a deterrent for registering. All meetings are recorded.

Through our partnership with the University of North Dakota, we offer 3 graduate-level professional development credits for all of our courses. Upon courses completion, participants will receive an official University Transcript. Courses are also available in Non-credit version where participants can receive credit hours to submit for Act 48.
